Praying God’s Word 5–The Holy of Holies

The Holy of Holies in IntercessionWho we are in Christ and who He is in us.

And now I do not cease to give thanks for _____, making mention of them in my prayers: that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to them the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him, the eyes of their understanding being enlightened; that they may know what is the hope of Your calling, what are the riches of the glory of Your inheritance in the saints, and what is the exceeding greatness of Your power toward us who believe, according to the working of Your mighty power which You worked in Christ when You raised Him from the dead and seated Him at Your right hand in the heavenly places, far above all principality and power and might and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in that which is to come. And You put all things under His feet, and gave Him to be head over all things to the church, which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all.

I also, do not cease to pray for _____, and to ask that they may be filled with the knowledge of Your will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding; that they may walk worthy of You Lord, fully pleasing You, being fruitful in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God; strengthened with all might, according to Your glorious power, for all patience and longsuffering with joy; giving thanks to You Father who has qualified them to be partaker of the inheritance of the saints in the light. You have delivered them from the power of darkness and conveyed them into the kingdom of the Son of Your love, in whom they have redemption through Your blood, the forgiveness of sins. You are the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For by You all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through You and for You. And You are before all things, and in You all things consist.

I also pray always for _____ that You God would count them worthy of this calling, and fulfill all the good pleasure of Your goodness and the work of faith with power, that the name of our Lord Jesus Christ may be glorified in _____, and You in Him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ. I thank You that it is You who works in _____ to will and to do of Your good pleasure. (Eph. 1:16-23; Col. 1:9-14; 2 Thess. 1:11-12)

This is the Holy of Holies in intercession. I urge you to break these lofty passages down into bite sized chunks and examine each nugget, hold each phrase up to the Light and handle it, taste it, eat it, chew it, swallow it and digest it. You will be filled with such holy awe when you have finished that you will go back for more and more because this is the Christian life. This is the abundant Life.

But really, it is necessary to start at the beginning of Ephesians and camp out in that vast ocean of grace, putting our own name in every place and understanding what it means to be “in Christ.” I challenge you to do that. Start in Ephesians 1 and 2 and brood over it, dive down deep into it, talk to Jesus about it, drink it, float on top of it. This is holy ground.

I know people who have read through the Bible multiple times and who are all wrapped up in the clothing of the do’s and don’ts and the should’s and the should not’s; scripture rolls off their tongues like oil, the right scripture for every situation. They have done it all the right way, never colored outside the lines. They can quote all of the obedience passages, with the scripture to back up what you should or should not be “doing” as a believer. I was one of them; I know what that is like. I could point the righteous finger with the best of them. Until I came to the end of all that I thought I could “do” and fell into the deep pit of “I can’t” and then into the abyss of “I won’t.” Way down in that pit, after I had tried everything I knew to “do” the Christian life, longing for the “abundant life” that Jesus promised, wondering why, if I was saved, if I knew the Bible backwards and forwards, was I still empty and starving for the “more” that I knew was there and it was there that Jesus found me, and He showed me that I could not get through that narrow gate into abundant life as long as I was wearing all of my externals—He had to strip away everything that I thought was supposed to bring me happiness, and He led me directly into Ephesians 1, 2 and 3. He read it to me:

“I have given My grace and undisturbed peace to you, Kathy. I have already blessed you, Kathy, with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Me—I AM, Jesus the Messiah.

“Kathy, I chose you, picked you out for Myself as My own, before I laid the foundation of the world, before Genesis 1; to set you apart as blameless in Me.

“In My love for you Kathy, I appointed you before you were born, to be adopted as My own child, because it pleased Me to do this and so that you would bring glory and praise to Me. I didn’t have to do it; it was for My good pleasure—having you as My child brings me pleasure—I wanted you!

“I have redeemed you Kathy! I am your Goel, your Redeemer, and that redemption cost Me everything but cost you nothing, now you are in Me and I am in you, and your sins, past, present and future, are under My blood. All of this, I lavished upon you, Kathy, with all of My wisdom and understanding and I have made known to you the mystery of My will according to My good pleasure, which I purposed in Christ, to be put into effect when the times have reached their fulfillment—to bring all things in heaven and on earth together under the headship of Christ. I have chosen you, Kathy, to be a part of the unfolding of all of My plans, not only for you personally, but as you fit into the entire plan for all ages.

”Kathy! Your life matters to Me! You matter to Me!”

That’s just the first ten verses. Oh, beloved followers of Jesus, do you have a solid understanding of who you are in Christ, and who he is in you? Before we fully grasp the magnitude of what we are really involved in as followers of Jesus, we must believe this is how He really feels about us. This thing is big, bigger than we can imagine.

I won’t even attempt to unpack the prayers above, because only as you read them, out loud, will the power of those words come alive in your own atmosphere of the Holy Spirit.
